Mountain Top Villages Tour Snap Shots: On the way there you will pass El Retiro, (famous for furniture making) and Fincas(FARMS) in a cool mountain climate. During the daytime at this high altitude if there no clouds it still gets hot, as you’re close to the sun. On the way back one of our drivers takes people by San Antonio de Periera which is a nice place to stop at night for a few beers or a just take a break at the town square. A quick stop at some of the fruit and vegtable stands is a favorite for many heading back into town. You can buy 100 small bananas for 5 bucks! The only problem is eating all of them in 1 week! haha
* Week day tours provide faster movement on the roads, as everyone goes to these towns on the weekend, however if you prefer to be without when the boats, and water rides are in full swing you should go during the weekend.
EL PEÑOL: EL Peñol is a beautiful town located 37.5 miles from Medellín and 5.6 miles from Guatapé. This is one of the most beautiful towns in Colombia. The old town was flooded in order to build a reservoir with the same name. This reservoir provides most of Colombia’s lectric power. Some times, when the water is low enough, you can see the cross of the main church under the water which is the hurch of the old town. In this part of the town you can also enjoy practicing sports such as rafting, fishing, and other water sports in the Peñol Dam. You could be impressed for the big variety of fruits, vegetables and delicious typical “paisa” food.
GUATAPÉ: This is another beautiful town close to El Peñol. The main attraction you will find in Guatapé is the “La Piedra del Peñol”, an immense 721-foot monolith, which you will want to climb – by means of a staircase to be witness one of the greatest views in the country. On the top of the rock was built a viewing spot, where it is possible to acquire handcraft products, mail rds, and other local goods. It is possible to see the 500 km shore-perimeter dam. This town is also known because the buildings and houses around the town center are decorated nicely with socles on its houses adorned with different motives. Guatapé lies on the shores of El Peñol dam where you can rent botes, water bicycles or ferries equipped with music. You can have a picnic with your family and a great vacation day with your friends since the dam shores seem like a very clean, quite and relaxing beach. Guatapé is another typical colonial town located in the east of Antioquia.
And as if that were no enough, this is not all. There are some beautiful, affordable and comfortable hotels and hostels you can be accommodated if you want to enjoy a more than a 1 day tour in this town. You will be able to have a great experience at “La Piedra del Peñol”. The amazing chain of lakes connected together makes touring by boat for a couple hours on one of the many party or recreation boats a fun option to enjoy the day. We also book hotels and tour activities in El Peñol and Guatape.
The central downtown area of Guatape has a typical Colombian central park with a beautiful curch, surrounded by stores, restaurants, bars, and a couple hotels. The best restaurants to eat at are located lake side. You must walk around the central park of gautape to enjoy the artwork on the walls, and take some photos of the beautiful church as well. You will find the people extremely friendly in this village.
Guatapé and El Peñol are amoung the top choices to visit on your vacation to Colombia and are just about 2.5 hours outside of Medellin. You will pass through many beautiful towns or pueblos of Antioquia, Colombia on your way to Guatape!
PUEBLO TOURS – ANTIOQUIA VILLAGE COLOMBIA COUNTRY SIDE TOURS: You will take the panoramic roads from El Retiro to El Peñol or Guatape, (stopping at a waterfall along the way), and Maranilla, one of the oldest towns in Antioquia and Colombia.
